Here’s your chance to ask Riley a question! Simply email us your question, along with your name and where you are from and we will periodically choose a question for Riley to answer and it will be posted on this page!
Q. If you could fight any player past or present, who would it be and why? Lisa Larkin, Bensalem, PA
A. I would like to fight Todd Fedoruk and Craig Berube. Both are huge mentors of mine and two guys I really respect.
Q. How many tattoos do you have, and which piece is your favorite? Janee, Brooklyn, NY
A. I have around 8 tattoos. My favorite piece is one across my chest that says"civil savage".
Q. Do you have a pregame ritual, and if so, what is it? Megan Whelan, Philadelphia, PA
A. My pregame ritual consists of salmon pasta and broccoli, followed by a hour and a half nap. Then it’s just having fun and playing kick ball.
Q. Compared to other NHL rinks what do you think of the fan response at the Wachovia Center? Matthew Kirk Philadelphia
A. By far Philly fans have the greatest response to what’s going on in the game. They love hockey and cheer us on with alot of energy and passion.
Q. What is your main motivation for fighting? Is it for the fans and the team to get them riled up (no pun) or because you really dislike the guy your fighting? Brendan Horsham,PA
A. Me fighting is one of two things 1. We need a spark and some energy and to get the boys fired up. or 2. Someone is taking liberties on one my teamates. so i go out there and I take care of biz.
Q. Im hoping next year you get the chance to go with guys like Boogaard,Godard,King,Belak,Parker,Ivanans and Chara. Are you looking forward to getting a chance to tangle with any of the guys I mentioned that you haven’t fought yet? Anonymous
A. Next year will be a great opportunity for me to run into some different opponents because of the schedule changes they are making for next season. I’m pretty excited.
Q. Why did you change your number from 33 to 32 for the ’08 season, and is there any meaning behind the numbers you have chosen to wear throughout your career? Sean, Philadelphia, PA
A. I changed from 33 to 32 because last off season they signed Brian Boucher, a former flyer who wore 33. So just out of respect i gave him back his NHL number and took 32 because of old school flyer fighter Craig Berube. Most of my numbers growing up were kind of just given to me.
Q. What is your off ice training/practice for fighting, and how do other enforcers in the league train for fights? Jeff Herman, Voorhees, NJ
A. Well I kind of do my own thing and i’m sure every guy trains differently. I’ve taken a bit of karate and tae kwon do but this past summer I trained a completely different way then I had before. I trained in mixed martial arts. A lot of it was completely directed to hockey fighting but a lot of it was also just plain grip fighting, striking and basic conditioning drills. I really found this helped me out the most out of all the different ways I had trained before. check it out at www.njmaonline.com
Q. Who were your favorite enforcers growing up as a kid? Kurt Roberts, Pottstown, PA
A. Tie Domi was definitely my favorite enforcer. Mainly because I was a kid from Winnipeg and him slugging it out for the Jets, it only made sense. Also Jim Kyte, an old Jet and of course Bob Probert.
Q. How do you see the increase in visors affecting the role of fighting in the NHL?
A. Well as long as they don’t make it mandatory for all players to wear one I don’t think much will change. Players should have the option, especially in a sport like hockey. If for some reason they actually pull a stunt like making them mandatory I guess it would be like juniors all over again and of course all the minor leagues now. They just take their helmets off and get at it.
4. Who is your best rivalry with? Jason, Voorhees, NJ
A. I would probably have to say Shawn Thornton. We’ve had 2 good tilts this season and I must have fought him 6 times in the minors. He’s a real tough, honest guy who does his job well. When we fight we know its going to be a good one.
